When I stepped into the NEW Hotel in Athens for the first time, I noticed its impressive and special design but I did not realise that I have just entered the first ever hotel project of the award-winning designer duo, Fernando and Humberto Campana.
The NEW Hotel is a part of YES! Hotels Group which was established in 2004 with an idea to transform a hotel into a work of art. Besides the NEW Hotel, today you can find another 4 young, enthusiastic and seductive (as their motto says) hotels of the same group in Athens; Periscope, Semiramis, Twentyone and Kefalari Suites.
The NEW Hotel in General
The hotel is open 24 hours per day and offers a fast check in at any time. The multi-lingual staff is very kind and friendly. At the front desk, you can also get some information about Athens, its sights and how to get there. There is a bellboy waiting for guests to take their luggage to their room. Guests can also use free Wi-Fi access everywhere in the hotel. After the check-out, guests can store their luggage at the hotel until the end of the day.
The NEW Hotel’s Location
Located in the heart of the Athens centre, some main touristic spots like Syntagma Square, the most famous square in Athens, and Hellenic Parliament Building, a former Palace, with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier honouring the common memories of all soldiers killed in war, are just a few steps away. Just around the corner, you can also find Plaka, the city’s oldest historic neighbourhood.
You can pick between 6 different types of soundproof hotel rooms; Standard, Superior, Superior Plus, Studio, Junior Suite and the Penthouse Suite. Although all of them offer the same facilities such as a wake-up call, a direct telephone number and a voice mail, bathroom amenities, bathrobes, slippers, a hairdryer, a smart TV, a work desk, a minibar and a safe deposit box, they differ in their size and the positions that offer views of different parts of the city.
All rooms are non-smoking ones. Smoking is allowed only on balconies and the hotel’s open-air spaces. Each room is unique by its artwork installations and pieces of handmade designed furniture. There are electric sun-proof and blackout roll top curtains to protect your room from the light coming inside at night and in the morning. If you get hungry, the hotel staff is there for you 24 hours/day so you can easily call the room service.
Each room also has a pillow menu, offering you 3 types of pillows with a short explanation which one should suit you best. All of them are hypoallergic which means that are very unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. This with a combination of Simmons Mattresses and first-class luxury bed linens is a perfect match for a night of pleasing sleep.
Furthermore, the cleaning lady comes in the afternoon to ask you if you have everything you need and to provide you with turndown service. Upon leaving the room, she gives you a small chocolate bar.
NEW Hotel’s Services at Additional Cost
The hotel can provide you with laundry and dry cleaning service, personal training, medical service, babysitting, transportation from/to the hotel, car rental and guided city tours or daily cruises.
A Short Description of Rooms by the Hotel Staff
Standard Rooms: With a generous 20 to 23 square meters of space, these rooms are unusually large for standard rooms. Offering a side street view, they catch the vibe of the historic neighbourhood.
Superior Rooms: They offer a side-street view. An extra bed can be added upon request.
Superior Plus Rooms: Superbly arranged two side-street superior rooms located on the 6th floor offer stunning views of Lycabettus Hill. The front rooms on Filellinon street overlook the Russian Church of Sotira Lykodimou (the largest medieval building in Athens) and the exquisite National Gardens.
Studios: They cover 30 square meters of sophisticated design, including a comfortable sitting area to wind down. The majority of studios are street corner rooms, overlooking the Russian Church of Sotira Lykodimou, the largest medieval building in Athens, and the exquisite National Gardens.
Junior Suites: Generously spaced in their 35 square meters, the junior suites treat their guests by offering them separate sleeping and living room areas. Comfortable sofas are a must. There is also authentic modern art on display, as each suite boasts a unique art installation from renowned Greek artists. All junior suites overlook a hanging garden, with intricately woven walls.
Penthouse Suite: Designed to perfection, the spacious penthouse suite encapsulates the Campana aesthetic in all its 70 square meters. Every piece of furniture, every fixture and furnishing, even the custom-made carpet has been handpicked to create a sense of understated yet unsurpassable exclusivity.
Each space is designed to maximize comfort, with separate sleeping room and living room areas. Entirely cast from marble, the bathroom adds to the plush effect. The suite has a large terrace which appears to be embracing the city below, affording 360° views of all the historical landmarks, including the Acropolis, Lycabettus Hill, Syntagma Square and the House of Parliament.
My First Impression
This is a spoiler alert! If you do not want to ruin yourself a surprise, just skip to the next chapter. Having said that, wow! How can I even find the words to describe my surprise when I entered my room. At the moment I opened the door, the TV turned itself on and started playing I’m Yours by Jason Mraz. It was a nice gesture to show me that the hotel staff is always there for me.
The bathroom is indeed something special because it is not entirely separated from the main area but it still offers total privacy. I loved the spacious shower and the fancy mirror that lightens itself up when you approach it.
You can enjoy the hotel’s delicious and diverse breakfast every day between 07:00 and 10:30 am but is that is already too late for you, stop at the reception and ask about their “early bird breakfast” or a breakfast/lunch box.
The Rooftop Bar & Restaurant
There are many rooftop bars in Athens but if you stay in the NEW Hotel you have one of your own already at your current address. On weekends, Art Lounge is open from 12 PM to midnight and from 18 PM to midnight every other day. Take some time and stop there for dinner or a cocktail and catch some charming views of a city.
Fitness, Wellness & More
Every guest has free access to the NEW Sense Fitness Centre and the Hamam (Turkish baths) located in the hotel. You can choose between 15 different wellness treatments such as Jet Lag Aromatic Remedy and Multivitamin Power Treatment. Check out their duration times and prices here.

On the same page, you can also find some last minute 15% discounts.
Value for Money & About Negative Comments
I was very surprised to see that the NEW Hotel has a rating of only 8,8/10 on Booking and 4,5/5 on TripAdvisor because, in my opinion, it deserves more. So I read a few of them and I realised that most of them are not constructive criticism at all.
Some of the guests were disappointed because breakfast was not included in the price so please read carefully what your booking includes before paying it. The NEW Hotel offers stays with and without breakfast. Others complained about the light entering the room in the morning but they obviously have not used the blackout roll curtains. Some complained about the priciness of the rooms and food but after all, everything is expensive in Athens (just a scoop of ice cream is 3€; if you want to know more, read some other interesting facts about Greeks and Greece).
My stay in the NEW Hotel was definitely a positive experience and I believe it is worth every penny.
Now it is time for you to let me know what you think about the hotel in the comment section below! Have you ever stayed in the NEW Hotel in Athens or any other hotel of YES! Hotels Group? Which one?
